Drama Club Starts on January 14th

Do you love to perform? Are you a student who is interested in trying a new, fresh approach to acting? Luckily for you, Flex Tech is offering a Drama Club after school for a six week period starting January 28th. With the help of local professional actor, Dawn Purcell, this after school club has been developed to teach high school aged actors the tools and techniques they will need to become a better actor.

Every Tuesday from 2:30-4:30pm Ms. Purcell will lead exercises specifically aimed at teaching students the tools that professional actors use in their craft. By the fourth week, each student will be partnered with a fellow club member for scene work. The final week will be designated for performing the full scene for the club with props and simple set pieces.

This club will be run more like a course than a club as it does require 1-2 hours of work outside meeting times, and it should be noted that any student who signs up is committing to the entire six week period. Due to the nature of the club and to keep the structure of the meetings balanced, we are capping the club at 12 students. There is also a small fee of $100/student in order to attend the club. Scholarships may be available.

There will be a more in depth informational meeting held at FlexTech on January 14th led by Ms. Purcell at 2:30pm. She will be answering any questions you may have, and will also be discussing some of the material she will be covering during the six week period. Ms. Purcell strongly encourages attending this meeting if you are interested in attending the club. If you may need help financially, scholarship inquiries will be addressed.

Ms. Purcell is a graduate of Siena Heights University with a BA in Theatre and Speech Communication. She is a former apprentice at The Purple Rose Theatre Company, and recently performed as Martha in The Encore Musical Theatre Company's production of The Secret Garden.

Ms. Merwin is FlexTech’s Art Teacher and she will serve as the liaison for the school. The Michigan Merit Curriculum one credit graduation requirement in the visual, performing, and applied arts is a minimum requirement.  If students successfully complete the 6 weeks course they will earn .25 credit of VISUAL, PERFORMING AND APPLIED ARTS required credit.

Looking forward to seeing you at the informational meeting on January 14th, at 2:30.
